Few days ago I received a fantastic book from Tuttle PublishingJapanese Design: Art, Aesthetic & Culture, written by Patricia J. Graham. Tuttle is the world’s largest publisher of books on Asia. Japanese Design is their latest title which will be released on September 30, 2014. I am very pleased that the publisher decided to give me the book before the official release date, so that I could be one of the first of its readers.

Japanese Design: Art, Aesthetic & Culture by Patricia J. Graham

Patricia J. Graham is an expert on Asian art. In her new book she introduces the most important styles of Japanese aesthetics. She briefly explains how they have developed and describes factors that affected them. There are also presented key features of design in Japanese culture. Finally, the author dedicated a whole chapter to present admirers of Japanese design from the 1830-1950, which promoted it in the world. The book is rich in photographs so it’s a fantastic guide to the basic concepts of Japanese aesthetics.

I like the fact that after describing the most important principles of Japanese design, the author presents examples of work of contemporary designers that are based on them. There are also some important paragraphs explaining that nowadays some of the Japanese aesthetic terms are often incorrectly interpreted and overused.

Unfortunately the layout of the book doesn’t have much in common with Japanese simplicity and subtlety. Photographs sometimes seem a bit crammed and placed unnecessarily on some pages (for example, the table of contents and the cover look really messy). I believe that the layout should reflect the subject matter. In this regard, edition of Japanese Design has been treated rather trite.

I am fascinated by Japanese design, so I had a great pleasure in reading Patricia J. Graham’s book. It’s a very interesting and affordable publication for anyone keen on Japanese aesthetics. If you want to broaden your knowledge about this topic, this book will smoothly guide you through all those interesting issues.
